Carson McCullers was an acclaimed novelist and confidant of Tennessee Williams. While living in Paris during the 1950s, she made periodic, overnight visits to the city's American Hospital. Health concerns were only one reason why McCullers preferred going there. The acclaimed author liked the attention that doctors paid her, and she also enjoyed eating American food. One of McCullers’ friends recalled, "Her appetite for both food and drink was huge at that time."
