The Mortality Menu

Last week, Texas prison officials announced an end to the practice of allowing death row inmates to choose the dishes that make up their last meal. The decision followed a state legislator's outraged reaction after learning of the final, elaborate dinner that was served to Lawrence Russell Brewer before he was executed September 21. This was the meal served to Brewer:
- 2 chicken-fried steaks with gravy and sliced onions
- a bowl of fried okra with ketchup
- three fajitas
- a triple-patty bacon cheeseburger
- a cheese omelet with ground beef, tomatoes, peppers and onions
- a pound of barbecued meat with half a loaf of bread
- a meat-lover’s pizza
- a pint of Blue Bell Ice Cream
- a hunk of peanut-butter fudge with crushed peanuts, and
- 3 root beers
But here's a strange twist to this story. Brewer didn't eat the meal that outraged State Senator John Whitmire. Why? Perhaps impending death was enough to spoil his appetite.
